Called to Serve

Matthew 20:26-28 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

God has given each of His children gifts and talents with which to serve Him. They are to be used to give God glory. Yet, we stumble when we allow them to be used for our glory.

Our enemy, Satan, knows firsthand what that is like.

Ezekiel 28:13-15 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”

Lucifer was beautiful.

He was the anointed cherub to oversee God’s throne.

He was created with musical instruments within him. He held the highest angelic position until sin entered his heart.

Isaiah 14:12-15 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

As we serve God, we are continually oppressed by the enemy to turn our hearts selfish and self-focused on who we are and how it affects us. Jesus Himself taught his disciples the truth of servant leadership by word and example.

Many feel called to lead. Yet, in that call is Jesus’ admonition to be a servant. The best leader is the one who makes those around them better because of how they serve their followers.

Whether single, married, a parent, leader, or follower, we are all called as God’s children to serve in the position to which we are called.

May we seek God’s wisdom and power to be all He desires of us.
