Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”

Sliding down a slope is fun until you get to the bottom. Stopping might be abrupt and even dangerous if not carefully planned out.

When we find ourselves at a distance from God, the process started slowly, barely noticeable. We may have left off our Bible reading, prayer, or church attendance. One day turned into a week and a week into months. Pretty soon, we look up and wonder how we arrived here.

We call it backsliding – or sliding back from the forefront of the Christian life.

Hosea 4:16 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.”

Some verses speak against this activity.

Psalm 26:1 A Psalm of David. Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.”

Psalm 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.”

God’s Word provides the path to avoid backsliding or going backward in the Christian life.

Give earnest heed – or do what you know to do. Simply obey.

Far too often, we look back on failure and realize that if we had done what we knew to do in the first place, we could have missed the pain, hurt, and loss.

Giving the more earnest heed is living a scheduled life, an ordered life, a prepared life.

More often than not, someone will share in counseling that if they had read their Bible that day, they would have read spoke directly to what they faced and would’ve helped recognize or even avoid the failure.

God has a way of preparing us for what we will face every day.

David speaks of his integrity and trust in the Lord.

Webster’s dictionary defines integrity this way:

“The entire, unimpaired state of any thing, particularly of the mind; moral soundness or purity; incorruptness; uprightness; honesty. Integrity comprehends the whole moral character, but has a special reference to uprightness in mutual dealings, transfers of property, and agencies for others.”

Moral soundness and purity. It should not surprise us that our enemy assaults our integrity every single day. Whether it is a billboard picture, a commercial on television, a radio ad, or an advertisement on our computer’s side banner, images are thrust before us continually.

We must take control of what we see and hear as it influences what we meditate on throughout our day. Unless we take the more earnest heed, we will slide from where we are headed through apathy or just plain laziness.

The Bible speaks of the ‘wiles of the devil.’

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

When we see how he attacks, we can prepare accordingly. Therein lies the problem – we forget that preparation is a daily and sometimes moment by moment affair. We may grow to a comfort level of our Christianity that gives us a false sense of security.

We begin to think we can handle whatever comes and let down our guard. Every day is a battle with my flesh, my emotions, my attitudes, and perceptions. Giving them over to God and allowing Him to be the sole Influencer in our life is the real recipe for success.

Daily Manna began to help those struggling to establish a daily routine of Bible reading, prayer, and meditation. It is our prayer that we will always be that for any and all in the future.
