Proverbs 14:20-21 The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends. He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.”

All of us have neighbors. Some are close in proximity, others by the spirit we have with them when we’re near.

How we treat them is of utmost importance. As we are ambassadors of the King of Kings, we must beware of how we treat those around us. We all have opinions, prejudices, and preferences and how we employ them or not reflects on us and who we represent.

Wisdom teaches us that the poor do not have the same opportunities for friendship because of their station, financial status, or lot in life. Riches make things easier, but shouldn’t be the reason we as children of God give or withhold our friendship.

But it also teaches that if we despise someone because of their situation and circumstance, we sin if we do not show mercy.

Jesus was and is our example.

Matthew 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.”

Are we like Jesus in that we share our friendship with those around us no matter who they are and what they can do for us?

Or are our friendships tight and close knit because of shared interests, similar talents, or position?

Each life we come in contact with is not by chance. Our works are set for us before the foundation of the world. God desires us to be witnesses for Him; an example of His Son to a lost and dying world.

Our enemy wants to destroy that picture of Christ to the world. Therein lies our battle.

I am convicted deeply over the mistreatment of those I have met in the past and by words and deeds done or not done, failed to be the witness for my Savior who gave everything for me.

It only takes a little kindness, a little love, and a determination to represent Christ more than self. It is not for us to choose to whom, but how.

Let us do our best to represent our Savior no matter who crosses our path!
